Yellowstone Day 03 – The Most Beautiful Trout

The most beautiful trout I’ve ever seen…

The most beautiful trout I’ve ever seen…

The most beautiful trout I’ve ever seen…

What a day…  The weather was perfect AGAIN (sunny, a warm 48 degrees, no wind, no people – just elk, trout and gin clear water).  If it’s possible to have the most gratifying and frustrating day fishing all in the same 8 hours, well that’s what today was.  I landed 21 spectacular fish (all over 18” and up to 7 pounds) but I missed at least 30   :-0  More than 10 fish broke me off and I saw about half of them as they went airborne and they were really big.  Mid-day I switched over to a slightly heavier 4 X leader to increase the tippet strength about a pound but it didn’t seem to help.  These fish are HOT!

The spawning colors are the most vivid I’ve ever seen and the fish are by far the healthiest in the 17 years that we’ve been fishing the secret spot.  It will take me a week to process all the photos but here are a few that defined the grand day out.

Enjoy and plan your trips.

Monster Chinook – September 2017

Jay Peck - Monster Chinook - FFPCongrats to Jay Peck and his client who just landed the largest King Salmon ever to visit his net.  At 45 Lbs it is also one of the largest ever landed on the Salmon River in Pulaski, NY.  The beast ran-them around the meadow pool for over 20 minutes.

Well, this just made my day.  The IGFA is going to use a large inventory of my photos for marketing and membership drive purposes.  This is a sample that was featured in their monthly newsletter for September.  The fish portrait of the Steelhead was taken in 2013 on Little Sandy Creek in Hamlin NY.  The angler was actually “The one and only” Rod Mergardt (our favorite coach).

More to follow.

Riverside in Manaus

Katie, Tony Thompson and I started out in Manaus on New Year’s Eve to stage for our journey into the middle of the Amazon Jungle.  We had a day to tour the city and then travel via small boat to the confluence of the Rio Negro and Amazon Rivers.  The Rio Negro is tea colored and fairly clear while the Amazon is literally “chocolate milk” with the visibility of about 3 inches.  Manaus is the largest city in Brazil with a population of approximately two million residents.  It serves as the industrial center of the country with several large multi-national manufacturing companies and a large energy sector.

Tom Olivo and Fly Fishing Portraits – Featured Article in January Edition

I wanted to share with you an article that I wrote for Montana Fly Fishing Magazine.  The article title is Ehren Wells did a fine job with the layout and formatting.  His magazine supports multiple devices and displays nicely even on smaller screens.

I’m planning a similar article for salt water fishing to feature Redfish, Bonefish, Tarpon and Snook.  Will let you know my progress.

Enjoy and feel free to forward to your fishing partners.

2013 Fall Field Campaign

The Fall Field Campaign kicked off with three great days of Chinook Salmon fishing with Jay Peck on the Salmon River in Pulaski NY on September 7-9.

Tom Olivo with 30 Lb Chinook Pulaski NY September 2013 - 8 (1024x622)

Jay Peck with 30 Lb Chinook Salmon September 2013 (1024x669)Day one provided the usual excitement with the first 4 fish slamming the fly and breaking off as they charged up river at full speed. The first fish that I actually hooked on my second cast could have pushed the 40 pound mark and was the largest Salmon by far over the three days of fishing.  It was incredibly bright chrome, powerful and fat.  I then changed from 12 Lb. tippet to 15 and proceeded to land 6 fish in the 28 to 31 pound range.  Jay and I estimate that the fish are running about 5 pounds larger than last year averaging about 28 pounds. Final note:  I made my first major fishing magazine cover with the Fall edition of Lake Ontario Outdoors.  The picture was of “Frankenfish,” the Coho/Chinook hybrid that was 34 pounds (picture by Jay Peck).
