The Best Guides in my Favorite Fisheries - Creating Memorable Experiences

I've always subscribed to the philosophy of "learning from the best" (as an athlete, coach and business executive) and when it comes to fishing, having the best guide can make the difference between having an average day on the water to making the outing a truly memorable experience.

In every new fishery that I explore for the first time, I conduct some research to find out who the absolute best guides are, how experienced they may be and what their "fishing practices" are relative to their discipline, tactical style and ethics in preserving the habitat and fishery itself. They truly need to be "stewards of the precious resource" and interested in educating the next generation of angler.

Since I also tend to be uncompromising with my standards and rather hard core with respect to my fishing pain threshold, I personally want to retain guides that aren't interested so much in "banking hours" and who will do what ever it takes under adverse conditions to hunt for the "uncatchable fish."  I always joke with people that my standard day fishing on the water is a "Half day." By that I usually have to quantify it by saying the following... Question: How many hours are there in a typical day? Answer: 24 hours. Therefore, I expect to fish for a "half day" which adds up to be 12 hours on the water (the last time I measured it).

When I focus on a fishery that I want to explore and a particular species of fish that I want to target, one of the first things that I say to the guide that I select is that my goal is to "earn the right to be considered both their best client and their favorite client."  That way, they also are likely to have an exceptional day on the water and if they ever have to make a choice with who they guide on a particular day, I will move up on the priority list to be #1.

Another important attribute about the guides that I retain is that they've GOT TO BE PASSIONATE about their profession to a level of enthusiasm that's contagious.  If I'm fishing with a family member, client or close friend, it's not likely that they will be as hard core an angler as me but I want them to HAVE FUN so that they truly look forward to their next outing and they are willing to share their special memorable experience with as many people as possible.

This section is dedicated to the best guides that I've retained in my favorite fisheries. Please feel free to reach out to them if you or a close friend is interested in having a truly memorable experience on the water. Their contact information is provided.
